Chicago-based rock band Wilco successfully concluded the eighth edition of its biennial Solid Sound festival. From June 28 to 30, the gallery space of Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) was packed with fans that experienced more than just a typical Wilco concert. Since 2010 when Wilco first had their Solid Sound festival, Mass MoCa became its second home.
This year’s festival was billed as “a special, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-repeated” edition of Solid Sound. The fans were never disappointed, especially on June 29. Jeff Tweedy and his entire crew gave the audience a surprise when they performed the entire “A Ghost is Born” album. Wilco won the Grammy award for Best Alternative Album in 2005 for Ghost. Wilco featured Ghost in this year’s Solid Sound to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary.
The audience was unsuspecting of what was coming that night. In their first 10 songs, Wilco performed a mixed repertoire taken from their 30-year catalog, including two songs from “Hot Sun Cool Shroud,” their newest extended play (EP). Then, Wilco performed “At Least That’s What You Said,” followed by “Less Than You Think,” and then “Muzzle Bees,” which are all songs belonging to the Ghost album. At that time, it became apparent that Wilco was going to perform all 12 songs on the Ghost album. To cap Ghost, Wilco ended with “The Late Greats.” After completing the Ghost album, Wilco offered five more songs from other albums before closing the night.
